The madness of US Politics and the so called land of the free

I am very sure I cannot be the only person who finds what is happening to the USA quite disturbing. A President who cannot and will not understand the basis of democracy. (Free speech and freedom of action within a communally agreed set of laws. ) A militia based, armed right wing that believes it has the right to act as Nazi stormtroopers if there is anything tha happens that impinges on their insane world view. A media explosion that the far right has exploited to spread disinformation and lies as fact, throw doubt on truth and scream for authoritarian action against democracy. A right wing that ,as in the UK and other parts of Europe, managed to make the mainstream of politics very much more right than centre.

It’s a worry. And don’t even contemplate the right wing politicisation of the Covid pandemic. What will the end of this be? Has Trump seriously considered using the military to keep him in power? It is, tragically, nowhere near the bounds of probability. And the appalling behaviour of the Republican Party that is so Trumpified it has forgotten what it was set up to be. It was always anti -big government and pro -freedom, where Trump is authoritarian and pro -enriching his criminally corrupt self through the offices of government.

I fear for us all. Trump is very much a man in thr Hitler mode, seeking to destroy what he cannot keep lawfully and lying, cheating and corruptly dealing with any and all opposition.

I do not blame Trump for his antics, after all he is what he is and always was, but I do blame the US voters who put him there, the Republican grandees who keep him topped up with sweet lies and anti -democratic attitudes and the mad media support he has. Anti -liberal democratic feelings are growing all over the western world, and democracy rarely found fertile ground elsewhere. Just as in the 1920s and 1930s with the rise of the many fascist and authoritarian governments in Spain, Germany and Italy to name the main European ones, democracy and the freedoms that make us in the West privileged are at grave risk. This time though, it is the most significant democracy in the world that is trying to eradicate itself.
