The USA is a Primitive and Backward Country

We might think of the USA as a forward thinking and edge of technology nation.  That is true, no one can argue that the USA has a phenomenal modern tech industrial base.  But the USA is without doubt also a primitive and backward nation.  It’s recent history and it’s action over the last 150 years shows that it fails completely to behave in a modern and civilised, thinking way.  I could say, at this point, that any nation which elected Donald Trump as President not once, but twice is certifiably insane, but I won’t, not yet anyway.

Instead I should point out that it was only in 1865 after a terrible war that slavery was abolished in the USA.  Mind you it was only in 1834 that the UK formally abolished slavery, although the slave trade had been banned earlier and a judge’s ruling in 1772 had declared slavery illegal in England.  France had declared slavery abolished in 1794 but Napoleon Bonaparte reintroduced it in 1802 and it was not removed from France again until 1848.  What sets the US apart from the UK and France in the field of slavery was the way in which the USA soon found new ways to keep black people in a state that was definitely not freedom.   The Jim Crow laws which hypocritically declared that black people were equal to whites, but separate, lasted about 100 years from 1865 until 1965.  It proved to be a particularly effective way of keeping the black population oppressed.  Also as part of the racist laws there were attempts to slow or stop breeding between the races.  One might think that California, a liberal state now, was liberal then, but it had a whole set of extremely racist laws on miscegenation between whites and any person of another colour, Black, Chinese or Indian.  Needless to say, there is still a residual spirit of hard racism all across the southern states and beyond.

When we look at the religious life in the USA we have a primitive and wholly naive Christian interpretation of the Bible.  It really shows a backward and weak culture combined with a very poor and uncritical education system.  Western culture was built on criticism of ideology and the expansion of knowledge and technology.   The USA has recently, thanks to the ignorant and power – hungry Republican Party, worked against scientific enquiry as a significant and relevant issue, despite the need for it to maintain their trade and military supremacy. – This, incidentally, shows a grievous lack of understanding of how science operates, and the Republicans replaced it with an ideology based on promoting ignorance and stupidity.  It is hardly surprising that the USA has the government it has.  It is one of the great and unpleasant truths of Western Democracy that a nation always gets the government it deserves.

Let me recap, briefly.  The USA still has a strong racist element that is very much part of the current government’s thinking, its dominant religious thought is not only naive and steeped in uncritical thinking but embraces a vast accumulation of decidedly unchristian behaviours and attitudes.  Christian Nationalism, the appalling money grubbing of the TV evangelists and the dreadful legacy of the Southern Baptist Convention’s pro slavery anti human rights agenda.  Not to mention the war on women’s rights. Frequently a suggested feeder for these views is the age profile of the White Southern Baptist population.  As they age and therefore decline because their children tend to be less interested in religion they struggle with their position in the world and they tend to be less well educated and susceptible to varieties of QAnon style conspiracy theories.

But another reason why the US needs to be viewed as a backward nation is the regular use of state sponsored terrorism – particularly under Trump’s government, although that is nothing new and the harbouring of foreign dissidents who are also terrorists such as the Florida based Cuban population which has constantly asked for and frequently been supported by the US in acts of terrorism against the Cuban government and it’s leaders. It’s anti – democratic stance, supporting some of the most tyrannical governments particularly in South America and the Middle East.  The latter being a particular irony given that Israel which has, since 1948 complained about the Arabs wanting their land back, has zoomed to the top table in terms of racism and discrimination. Again a wonderful devotion to the Biblical view of the world

I could go on, but I would rather find something more fulfilling to do with my time and energy than to rail against the US, and Trump’s brand of anti – democratic government.  This has to be the last about the USA from me for a while.  It is all way beyond awful and I can only blame the citizens of the USA in total for allowing the banal, crass orange arch narcissist and compulsive liar to have any power at all, never mind the most powerful job in the world.
